Citation Flow (CF) is an SEO metric created by Majestic that predicts how influential a URL or domain might be based primarily on the number of backlinks pointing to it. Scored from 0 to 100, higher Citation Flow indicates more links and greater raw link equity.
In plain language: Citation Flow is a “link power” score based on link quantity. It does not directly measure link quality — that is handled by Majestic’s companion metric, Trust Flow.
How Does Citation Flow Work?
Majestic crawls the web and builds a massive link graph. Based on this data, they assign each URL a CF score by evaluating:
- How many links point to that URL
- How strong those linking URLs are (their own Citation Flow)
- How link equity flows through multiple levels of links in the graph
The exact formula is proprietary, but the key principles are straightforward:
- More backlinks generally means higher CF
- Links from pages with high CF boost your CF more
- The scale is logarithmic — going from CF 10 to 20 is much easier than 40 to 50
Citation Flow vs Trust Flow
CF is only one part of the picture. Used alone, it can be misleading because it does not distinguish between quality and spam. That is why Majestic pairs it with Trust Flow (TF):
- Citation Flow: How many links and how much link equity flows to your site (quantity)
- Trust Flow: How trustworthy and authoritative those links are (quality)
Important patterns:
- High CF + low TF: Red flag — lots of links, but many are likely low-quality or spammy
- Balanced CF and TF: Generally indicates a healthy, natural backlink profile
- TF higher than CF: Rare but positive — your links are from trusted sources even if the total volume is modest
The TF/CF ratio is a quick way to judge backlink profile quality. A ratio close to 1:1 or above suggests a clean profile. A ratio heavily skewed toward CF suggests a quantity-over-quality problem.
Is Citation Flow a Google Ranking Factor?
No. Citation Flow is a third-party metric from Majestic, not a Google metric. Google does not use CF in its ranking algorithm.
However, Citation Flow is useful because it reflects link equity patterns that do influence rankings. Sites with many quality backlinks tend to rank better, and CF provides a quick way to estimate that raw link power.
Why Citation Flow Matters for SEO
- Quick authority estimation: CF gives an instant sense of how strong a site’s backlink profile is in terms of volume
- Link prospect comparison: When evaluating potential link targets, CF helps compare the relative link strength of different domains
- Spam detection: Sites with very high CF but very low TF are likely link farms or sites with manipulative link profiles
- Competitor analysis: Compare your CF against competitors to understand the scale of link building investment needed to compete
How to Improve Citation Flow
- Build more backlinks: CF is primarily a volume metric, so increasing the number of referring domains raises your score
- Earn links from high-CF pages: Links from pages that already have strong link equity pass more CF to you
- Create shareable content: Content that gets widely referenced — tools, data, infographics — naturally accumulates links over time
- Maintain link diversity: Links from many different domains are more valuable than many links from a single domain
Remember: Citation Flow alone is not a quality signal. Always evaluate it alongside Trust Flow to get the complete picture of a backlink profile’s health.
